China remains one of the world's most important electronics manufacturing centers.

For overseas hardware companies, working with a China-based PCBA manufacturer can provide access to a large electronics supply chain, experienced engineering teams and flexible manufacturing capabilities.

However, choosing a supplier based only on unit price can create unnecessary risks.

Here are several things companies should consider before placing a PCBA order in China.

Provide Complete Manufacturing Information

Accurate quotations require accurate project information.

At minimum, you should prepare:

  • Gerber files

  • BOM

  • PCB quantity

  • Assembly quantity

  • Pick-and-place file

  • Special manufacturing requirements

If functional testing, firmware programming or enclosure assembly is required, these requirements should also be communicated during the quotation stage.

Check Whether Component Sourcing Is Included

Some PCBA companies only provide assembly services, while others offer complete turnkey manufacturing.

Turnkey PCBA normally includes:

PCB manufacturing + component sourcing + PCB assembly + testing.

For overseas customers, turnkey manufacturing can simplify purchasing because the customer does not need to manage dozens or hundreds of component suppliers separately.

Ask About Prototype Capability

If your product is still under development, choose a manufacturer that supports prototypes and engineering changes.

Prototype production is different from mass production.

During the prototype stage, designs may change frequently and engineers may need to communicate directly with the manufacturing team.

A flexible manufacturer can usually respond faster to these changes.

Understand the Testing Process

Before ordering, discuss how the finished PCBAs will be inspected and tested.

Different projects require different quality-control processes.

These may include:

AOI, X-ray, ICT, functional testing, firmware programming and burn-in testing.

For professional electronic products, functional testing is often one of the most important steps.

Do Not Evaluate Suppliers Only by Price

The lowest PCBA quotation does not always result in the lowest final manufacturing cost.

Poor component sourcing, low production yield, weak engineering support or inconsistent quality can create much greater costs later.

When comparing suppliers, consider:

  • Engineering capability

  • Quality control

  • Component sourcing

  • Communication

  • Production flexibility

  • Lead time

  • Testing capability

  • Traceability

Consider Future Production Requirements

Even if the first order is only 10 or 50 prototypes, consider what happens when the product enters production.

Changing manufacturers after a product has already been validated can introduce additional engineering and supply-chain risks.

Ideally, the same manufacturing partner should be capable of supporting:

Prototype builds → Pilot production → Low-volume production → Medium-volume production.
